Hippocampus operates preschool centres in villages with a population of more than 5000 people. The centres operate from rented premises in villages. The teachers are women from the villages who have finished school or college. These women undergo a rigorous selection process and are then given extensive training and support to become good teachers. The centres offer pre-school programs for children between the ages of 3-6 years.

The preschool program is holistic, activity-based and supports differential learning. Critical to the success of these programs is the translation of a complex curriculum and pedagogy into simple, executable micro lesson plans.

Hippocampus has been successful in building a solid foundation in a child’s formative years by providing for a multitude of developmental learning in a stimulating and secured environment. The children are engaged with age-appropriate activity based learning to enhance their sense of curiosity, and preparing them for a smooth transition from pre-school to formal school.

The entire operations of a Hippocampus preschool centre are tech-enabled. Teachers enter all data – from attendance, enrollment, fee collection, student assessment, teacher recruitment, and teacher performance on tablets. The entire operations are managed by using data extensively.

From the moment a child opens her eyes, nature sets her on the path of the learning which sets in motion from the survival and gradually progresses to self-actualisation over her lifetime.

In beginning there are no evident classrooms, no teachers and no set of instructions, yet the journey commences and paces to new phases.

My caregivers, my safe environment, my explorations, my expressions and many more components of her realm unfold through her own observations and experiences. Each segment brings in new learnings.

Following this natural design at Hippocampus Learning Centres we too, believe in the most organic phenomenon of learning, which is inventing your own knowledge.

We are committed to the cause of facilitating child-centric learning for young learners; with the help of rainbow of thoughts of great thinkers like Piaget, Froebel, Maria Montessori, Mahatma Gandhi, Krishnamurthy and many more!

We further draw support from school of thoughts like Reggio Email, Multiple intelligences and ever green play way methodology.

For us at Hippocampus Learning Centres these philosophies act as guiding light, steering us towards our mission of making children self-learners.

The program is creative conceptually and scientific in delivery.
The gamut of activities is designed to make learning fun for children keeping their interest and age in mind.
Teachers enable children to achieve their individual learning milestones, under friendly supervision.
The efforts are aimed to co-construct knowledge together by teachers and children. Their growth is observed, documented, assessed and recorded.
Community and parents participate through volunteer efforts to make the process more wholesome. They witness the development of learning parameters through multiple events and showcases organised throughout.

In pursuit of ‘my learning’ infinite resources, materials and inspiration is provided, so that the process of self-learning becomes a way of life!

Assessment methods

Monthly assessments are done for children across a broad set of parameters ranging from English – reading, speaking and writing, Math – concepts and operations, Mother tongue – reading, speaking and writing, Socio emotional development, Creative development, Gross and Fine Motor development. The 18-19 report clearly demonstrates that X% of children of graduating children are able to read English, Y% are able to addition, and Z% are able to meet their socio emotional goals defined.

HIPPOCAMPUS with financial support from UBS Foundation and USAID commissioned a 2 year Randomised Controlled Trial (RCT) by JPAL –MIT on 800 Kindergarteners. The results of this RCT, preliminary results of which were released in December 2018 have been very impressive.

Averaged across the test domains, a child who attended HIPPOCAMPUS as a result of the scholarship scored 0.82 standard deviations better than their control counterparts. This effect size means that attending HIPPOCAMPUS roughly doubled a child’s natural cognitive development compared to if she had attended the (govt run) anganwadi centre or been cared for at home. As another point of comparison, recent research on the Head Start program in the U.S. found gains less than half this size.

FSG runs a Program to Improve Private Early Education (PIPE) PIPE program in 2015. As a part of their impact report, PIPE assessed1134 APSs across 8 cities, including 25 Hippocampus schools. Across all 8 Learning outcomes reported, Hippocampus children did much better than the control group, and in many outcomes the performance of Hippocampus children was 200% better than that of the control group children
